Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP) in Bochum

On Friday, 21 November, Dr. Richard Lemoine-Rodríguez and M.Sc. Johannes Mast visited the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP) in Bochum at the invitation of its director, Prof. Meeyoung Cha. During the visit, they represented our Geolingual Studies team.

Dr. Lemoine-Rodríguez delivered a talk titled “Sensing cities: Linking urban form and online discourses  through remote sensing and social media data.” He presented our latest findings on global online urban discourses, highlighting connections between social media content, urban morphology, and urban heat patterns. His talk also addressed disparities in discussed topics and polarities between morphological slums and formal settlements in cities around the world.

M.Sc. Johannes Mast followed with a presentation on “Joining remote sensing and social media data for migration research.” He showcased how social media data can support the monitoring of human mobility and migrants’ discourses, and discussed differences in online activity between older and newly urbanized areas in the African continent.

During their visit, our researchers gained valuable insights into the cutting-edge work being conducted at MPI-SP and explored opportunities for future collaboration. As part of this emerging partnership, MPI-SP researchers will travel to the University of Würzburg in the coming months to engage with colleagues from the Earth Observation Research Cluster (EORC) and the Geolingual Studies team and learn more about our ongoing research.
