Würzburg Centre for Modern India (WCMI)

Within the innovative exchange program “A New Passage to India”, administered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and funded by the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), two program lines were granted to the University of Würzburg in 2010:

    • A “Würzburg Centre for Modern India” (WCMI), facilitating extensive academic exchange with Indian partner universities by inviting Indian faculty for teaching and research at Würzburg

    • A “Mobility Program”, to support students and doctoral researchers conducting research at partner institutions in India

After the initial successful four years, the program has recently been extended by another three years up to December 2017 (Mobility Program up to July 2016). Coordinated by the Chair of Indology, the project meanwhile involves ten chairs and four faculties at University of Würzburg; simultaneously, the number of participating Indian universities has grown to now ten partner institutions.
As an interdisciplinary initiative, the Würzburg Centre for Modern India promotes a wide range of India related research interests and teaching activities, with a focus on cultural, political, social, economic and legal sciences. In addition to a fruitful exchange with Indian scholars, a common research platform has evolved at CMI Würzburg on “Performing Gender - Negotiating Space in Civil Society”.
