The Troubles – Kenneth Branagh's film Belfast in the EFL classroom

This lecture will look at the potential of teaching Kenneth Branagh's autobiographical film Belfast (2021), which tells the story of a boy's childhood at the beginning of The Troubles in Belfast in 1969. The film will be explored for its representation of The Troubles and its suitability for the English language classroom will be reflected. After a concise synopsis and some contextual information, considerations on the teaching potential of the film will follow. Possible pre- and while-viewing tasks will be suggested for a first approach to Belfast. An in-depth analysis will then focus on how Kenneth Branagh’s film tackles The Troubles. In the end, post-viewing tasks will be discussed.
