About the IDK
The IDK Philology: Practices of premodern cultures, global perspectives and future concepts, located at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, pursues the goal of comparing European concepts and practices of philological work with traditions in Egypt, the Near East, the Far East and the Indian subcontinent as well as in the Jewish and Arabic world. We seek to compare their similarities and differences and to work out continuities and discontinuities. Doctoral students gain access to a research environment that stimulates inventive approaches and encourages excellent results.
Alongside working on their dissertation as an independent research project, doctoral students complete an accompanying curriculum (including compulsory and optional components), and acquire both philological competencies as well as IT and DH competencies. Their work will also contribute to the development of an e-learning tool, World Philology (learning software).
The IDK comprises the following disciplines: Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Catholic Theology, Classics (Greek and Latin Studies), Computational Linguistics, Egyptology (JMU Würzburg), English Studies, German Literature (1400-1700), German Medieval Studies, Indology, Jewish Studies, Legal History, Musicology, Protestant Theology, Romance Studies and Sinology (FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg).
The proposed dissertation should deal with philological practices of premodern cultures and / or the history of their study. Individual dissertation topics do not have to be comparative. A range of possible topics can be found on the IDK homepage; further ideas for topics are highly welcome.
- a successful degree in one of the participating disciplines (Master, Diploma, teaching degree/graduation no later than September 2021)
- an autonomous, well-structured and self-reliant way of working
- the readiness to engage in interdisciplinary work
- fluency in German or English (if you do not speak German, you are expected to acquire basic skills during the first year of the program)
We offer positions (65%, TV-L E13, if the requirements are given ) to twelve doctoral students for a period of 3 years. An extension for one further year can be applied for. The IDK provides the possibility to accomplish a doctorate supported by a dissertation committee consisting of two professors and one international cooperation partner. During the entire doctoral period, students have the opportunity to pursue an innovative research topic, to acquire additional competencies and to take advantage of opportunities for further qualification, provided by LMU.
Women are particularly encouraged to apply. We also welcome applications from applicants with disabilities. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in case of equally qualified candidates. Your workplace is located in central Munich and can easily be reached via public transport.
Applications should include a cover letter, a short CV (max. 2 pages), the proposal for a dissertation topic (2300 - 3200 words), a writing sample (4500 – 5400 words), copies of your university degree(s) and an evaluation of your thesis (if available).
