Pure Reed, Tall Reed: Reeds between Landscape and Ritual

Reeds were among the most ubiquitous materials in ancient Mesopotamia, used in everyday contexts, from construction to craft production, and even writing. Within ritual settings, however, they acquired a distinct status as pure and powerful objects, most notably as reed standards and reed huts, used in the creation of ritual spaces outside the temple.

How were reeds transformed from a mundane raw material into powerful ritual artifacts?

This talk approaches reeds in a threefold manner: their ecological life cycle and the labor involved in their production; their ritual introduction through Kultmittelbeschwörungen; and their environment of origin—the marshes, as reflected in Sumerian literature and beyond.

By bringing these perspectives together, the talk highlights how the ontological status of reeds shifted and how they acquired ritual efficacy in ceremonies such as the mīs pî, bīt rimki, and bīt salāʾ mê. It also draws broader consideration of the interplay between material, environment, ritual practice, and textual traditions
