The Institute of Art History at the University of Würzburg warmly welcomes international exchange students enrolled in Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at partner universities abroad. We are delighted that you are considering spending one or two semesters with us.
Studying art history in Würzburg offers a unique combination of academic excellence and direct engagement with original works of art. Many of our courses take place in the University’s own Martin von Wagner Museum, one of Germany’s oldest university museums and home to one of Europe’s largest university art collections. Its exceptional holdings provide outstanding opportunities for object-based teaching and research, allowing students to work closely with original artworks throughout their studies. Many courses also make use of the University Library’s special collections, including illuminated manuscripts, maps, prints, and illustrated books, as well as the historical medical collection and the city’s public architecture and monuments.
Würzburg itself is an ideal place to study art history. As a UNESCO World Heritage city, it is home to outstanding examples of architecture, painting, and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period and beyond. Situated in the heart of Europe, Würzburg also offers easy access to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Bavaria and neighbouring regions, making it an excellent base for excursions and independent study during your stay.
Our lecturers are happy to support international students and can communicate in English as well as several other European languages. While many courses are taught in German, English-language supervision and academic guidance are available throughout your stay.
